Dr. Melitta Sperling was a founding member of the Downstate Medical Center’s Psychoanalytic Institute and Its Child Analytic Program. She had been trained as a pediatrician prior to her psychiatric/psychoanalytic training. A pioneer in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders and a prolific writer, she concentrated on the interplay between mother and child that perpetuated psychophysiological reactions. She was a Training and Supervising Analyst in both the Adult and Child Analytic Programs. Dr. Otto Sperling established a fund for an annual lecture in memory of her contributions.
