Brief:
This book is bound to be of interest to those analysts who are intrigued by problems of the emigrant immigrant analyst who has passed from one cultural environment to another, and to those who seek ways by which psychoanalysis can make a contribution to the understanding of history or of the evolution of social events in general. In this book, it is suggested that the chief source of the bloody conflict between the Greeks and the Turks on the island of Cyprus is the fear of merging, of losing identity, and that underneath this fear lies a strong, regressive tendency toward a return to a symbiotic relationship with a clan's powerful mother. According to the author, the maternal figure is powerful among Greeks and Turks alike, despite the fact that externally these family clans are organized along strongly paternal, authoritarian lines. The persistent need for distancing oneself from such a central mother figure is met in major ways by defensive "splitting."

Endorsements:

“In societies where there are cultural and religious differences, the prevailing ethnic groups almost certainly resort to some form of conflict, usually physical, in order to either declare superiority over the other groups or assimilate them within their own. The net result of such conflict is either groups left in isolation or sub-groups assimilated within the more powerful group. In both cases, the members of the oppressed groups, be left in isolation or assimilated are almost always treated as second class citizens within the society. This in turn creates identity problems within such groups to the extent where the members may no longer even associate themselves with their own cultural and religious origins. This is a perfect scenario for opportunist groups who will try to capture these members who undergo severe identity crisis, in order to accomplish their own malicious plans.”
Assoc. Prof. Serdar Savasir,
  Brunel University, London.

IS THE LOSS A HURTING GIFT?

WHAT IS ENDLESS MOURNING?

HOW WE CAN SUCCESSFULLY MOURN?

WHAT WE GAIN FROM SUCCESSFUL MOURNING?

The death is the most bitter form of loss. We react to death, without knowing, with all the grievances of the past, including hasty breakups and their damage to our subconscious.

Mourning is not only a response to the death. It is a psychological response and the result of a consensus reached in our inner world to be able to adapt to the reality. It can be the loss of a family earring, a spouse, a lover, a friend, a hope, an ideal, a homeland or even our old self.

"GİDENİN ARDINDAN" explains to the reader that how unsolved losses negatively affect our childhood, teenage and adult life and insidiously manipulate our destiny within psychoanalytics and psychotheroaptics context and real-life examples. It tells all the psychological dynamics of a successful mourning and the changes we achieve as a result of it.

We are actually a bit of what we lost!

Loss is in the life of all of us.
It is like an uninvited guest who creeps into our story without asking us...
Even without knocking the door...
Most of the time, it stays overnight and frightens us as if it will never leave.
And when it goes away, we think it may come back anytime but knock the door this time.
On one hand, we don't want it to return, on the other hand we give an hear to the door.
When we finally understand that it will never come back, then everything is finished.
But the ends always turn into a new beginning and our loss always live with us.
When we started to work on this book, I have lost some of my loved ones back to back.
Among them were my relatives who were milestones
of my life like a priceless pearl necklace,
 my dearest teachers and my dearful friends the funerals
of whom I could not attend because their demise were intentionally not told me.
I am aware that what my unsolved mourning already took away from me
and will take more in the future.
I have left my feelings to the mercy of
moonlight which compassionately looks at me every night
 at the top of my roof and which gently hugs my trees in my backyard.
And I have replaced my past that never fades away in my mind
with a fake smile that smells like rain on my face.
Now, my dreams stand so lonely that no one asks "why the sun is blue?
why the grass is red? or why the sea is black?"
I am working hard to escape from thinking my losses.
I read, writer and plan.
My eyes hurt and my fingers throb with pain but all mixes
with the innocent routine of a new day.
However, I still locked up and become one of my losses.

I have decided: We are actually a bit of what we lost!

I would like to express my deepest thanks to my dearest teacher Vamık D. Volkan
for allowing me to write the foreword of this book.

And I thank to my dearest light...
 My grape whose heart is always with me...
I am with you... You are with me...

With the wish to be able to contribute to life with knowledge and creativity...

"A new book by Vamık Volkan is always a cause for celebration. His writing takes the reader to the heart of psychoanalysisthe elucidation and working through of core unconscious fantasies and conflicts. Volkan avoids the pitfalls of parochialism as he cogently describes effective psychoanalytic work. Psychoanalytic Technique Expanded should become the standard textbook of psychoanalysis. Generations of psychoanalysts will be in Volkans debt."

Richard M. Waugaman, M.D.,
Training and Supervising Analyst Emeritus, Washington Psychoanalytic Institute;
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC.;
  Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Washington, DC., USA.

"This excellent book covers technical issues in psychoanalysis from the first to last moments of the analytic dyad. This is especially illuminating as it expands clinicians views not only on the depths of the individual human psyche, but on how it is affected by societal issuesculture, ethnicity, religion, and history and how these factors manifest in the psychoanalytic setting. Volkans insights contribute much to the evolution of current psychoanalysis, and are crucial to psychoanalytic training and supervision if we are to fully analyze patients in the 21st century."

Işıl Vahip, M.D., FACPsa.,
Professor of Psychiatry, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey.

"In this exciting book, a master psychoanalyst makes his innovative “Field Work” teaching technique available to all of us. We can, figuratively, sit outside the one-way mirror to watch Dr. Volkan treat people with neurotic, borderline, and narcissistic personalities, from start to finish, using both modern and classical psychoanalytic techniques. Not only that, but he explains what he is doing while he is doing it! Dr. Volkan actually answers the perennial questions, "What am I treating?” as well as “What do I say?” and “Why does it work?” Fascinating and extraordinarily illuminating, Psychoanalytic Technique Expanded is unique in offering a bird's-eye view of updated analytic treatment for different types of disorders in the 21st century."

Author of 101 Defenses: How the Mind Shields Itself and Get the Diagnosis Right: Assessment and Treatment Selection for Mental Disorders.

"This book - a culmination of 40 years of experience - is one of the finest books I have read for some years. Dr. Volkan combines his deep and thorough understanding of the individual human psyche with a profound grasp of large-group psychology, a combination that marks this book as a unique contribution to our psychoanalytic literature and posits Dr. Volkan as a singular professional in our psychoanalytic landscape. Keeping a keen eye on the unconscious and on object relations, without neglecting the intersubjective dimensions of the analytic relationship, Dr. Volkan translates and implements many years of experience as a practicing psychoanalyst, supervisor and teacher in a very open, candid and accessible manner which makes this book a gift to teachers as well as students of psychoanalysis."

Michael Shoshani Rosenbaum Psy.D.,
Training and Supervising Analyst and Founding Chair ofthe Tel-Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis;
Faculty member of the New York University Program for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis;
Author of Dare to Be Human: A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Journey, Israel.

"The basic questions in the current book are: What am I treating and how am I treating it? Volkan provides us with detailed and well- illustrated material to find the answers to these important and useful questions. His principle in writing the book is: "Before I try to paint like Picasso, I should first learn to paint a face that is quickly and easily recognizable by everyone who looks at it." By examining unconscious material in a deep yet understandable way, he succeeds in his goal.

Because of his own exceptional background that includes years of work at high-levels of international diplomacy, Volkan´s understanding about the role of cultural, religious and historical events as well as actualized unconscious fantasies in the formation of individuals internal worlds and in analytic journeys is profound and deep and opens up whole new perspectives.

I warmly recommend the book to every psychoanalyst during this period of growing analytical pluralism, a trend that has its benefits and pitfalls. Psychoanalytic Technique Expanded will enrich discussion on psychoanalysis in theory and practice."

"While some may see the era of psychoanalytic pioneers as long past, the present volume might prompt reconsideration. Here psychoanalyst, explorer of cultural identity and consultant to the intersection of individual and international conflicts, Professor Vamık Volkan, teaches psychoanalytic technique. He shares his experience of a cross-section of the clinical phenomena encountered by the psychoanalytic practitioner. This experience is conveyed not just in the brief vignettes common in our literature, but at length in multiple descriptions of the courses of complete analyses. The yield in clinical breadth and depth is substantial and rare. In reading this book one has the experience of accompanying an analyst with a uniquely seasoned sensibility, the product of a lifetime of reflection on a vast variety of human foibles of every size and shape, through his clinical days, engaging in depth with his analytic caseload. In a relaxed, accessible, and conversational style, with pauses for educational and autobiographical asides, he narrates and we follow patients immersed in analytic treatment from start to finish. For beginning students or experienced psychodynamic clinicians of all schools, there is much here to savor, and there is ample space provided for ones own appraisals, considerations, and reformulations about what is offered."

Ralph H. Beaumont, M.D.;
Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst, Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute; Clinical Faculty, Oregon Health Sciences University, USA.

“My single observation, which restrains me from an unequivocal endorsement of this valuable, new resource, is the unmistakable implication that Dr. Volkan has a preference for an ego psychological, object relations approach to the analytic process and education. Inclusion in a textbook of multiple points of view would enhance its usefulness as an educational asset. Having a perspective that tilts toward a particular position is unavoidable but making an effort to incorporate multiple points of view strengthens a book aimed at being a teaching text. Dr. Volkan has done a creditable job of this as far as ego psychology, object relations, and a Kleinian perspective are included but a wider use of ego psychology would be helpful. Nonetheless, the clinical richness, detail, disarming self-disclosures, lucid description of terminology and definitions come together to render this a substantial addition to education. This textbook can be effectively incorporated into psychiatry and psychology training programs as well as into advanced psychotherapy training programs and beginning technique courses for psychoanalytic candidates. This book should be included in the syllabi of all of those programs and this reviewer believes the psychoanalytic community should be made widely aware of this publication.”
