This book is bound to be of interest to those analysts who are intrigued by problems of the emigrant immigrant analyst who has passed from one cultural environment to another, and to those who seek ways by which psychoanalysis can make a contribution to the understanding of history or of the evolution of social events in general.
In this book, it is suggested that the chief source of the bloody conflict between the Greeks and the Turks on the island of Cyprus is the fear of merging, of losing identity, and that underneath this fear lies a strong, regressive tendency toward a return to a symbiotic relationship with a clan's powerful mother. According to the author, the maternal figure is powerful among Greeks and Turks alike, despite the fact that externally these family clans are organized along strongly paternal, authoritarian lines. The persistent need for distancing oneself from such a central mother figure is met in major ways by defensive "splitting."

Reviews:

“In societies where there are cultural and religious differences, the prevailing ethnic groups almost certainly resort to some form of conflict, usually physical, in order to either declare superiority over the other groups or assimilate them within their own. The net result of such conflict is either groups left in isolation or sub-groups assimilated within the more powerful group. In both cases, the members of the oppressed groups, be left in isolation or assimilated are almost always treated as second class citizens within the society. This in turn creates identity problems within such groups to the extent where the members may no longer even associate themselves with their own cultural and religious origins. This is a perfect scenario for opportunist groups who will try to capture these members who undergo severe identity crisis, in order to accomplish their own malicious plans.”

"Books on the Arab-Israeli conflict fill a library, while the Lebanese civil war, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Iraq-Iran War have each inspired a sizeable literature. In contrast, the Pakistani-Indian and Turkish-Greek confrontations remain virtually unstudied in the West. This lacunae makes even so elementary work as Turks and Greeks useful to a wide range of readers, for there's simply nothing like it.

Volkan and Itzkowitz write from an emphatically Turkish point of view; the former is a professor of psychiatry of Turkish origins, the latter a historian of the Ottoman Empire. As befits these two disciplines, they approach the Turkish-Greek conflict historically with a strong dollop of psychology thrown in, a dollop that some readers may well find too strong. Still, they have interesting points to make. Perhaps the most intriguing has to do with the two concepts of Turkokratia (Greek, "Ottoman rule over Greeks") and Hellenism (in this context, an ideology of Western European origins that calls on Greeks to adopt ancient Greek ways). The authors note the extremely conspiratorial attitude of many Greeks toward Turks and argue that this results from hundreds of years of shared history followed by a need to live up to the Western ideal of Hellenism; to attain this, Greeks found it necessary to extrude all that is Ottoman about themselves, as well as to hate those who most obviously carry forward that legacy-today's Turks."

In Bloodlines: From Ethnic Pride to Ethnic Terrorism, Vamık D. Volkan, a world-renowned psychiatrist specializing in international relations, explores ethnic violence by examining history and diplomacy through a psychoanalytic lens. Dr. Volkan leads the reader on investigative tours of battlegrounds in the Middle East, Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, the Baltics, and the Balkans. In Serbia, he discovers that the Battle of Kosovo, fought in 1389, is the rallying cry for modern nationalists, who view the past as prophecy. In Turkey, PKK terrorist leader Apo reveals that he still considers himself an unloved child and orders his army of Kurdish women to remain virgins because of his own disgust with "unclean" adult behavior. In Latvia, after the dissolution of the USSR, Dr. Volkan learns that ethnic Latvians plan to disinter corpses and segregate cemeteries in an attempt to establish a national identity separate from that of Russia. Drawing on a variety of disciplines, Dr. Volkan analyzes these issues of identity formation, perceived versus real threats, the persistence of past traumas, and the desire for revenge. The result is a work that lays the foundation for understanding the differences between ethnic groups as well as the common ground they share.

"Volkan is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Virginia, where he runs the Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction. He turns this specialization into a unique perspective for explaining what leads people of one ethnic group to hate those in another, and then to translate that hate into harm. Aside from the awful and predictable case of Bosnia, he roams from Arab-Israeli enmity to Hungarian-Rumanian frictions, from the Greek-Turkish standoff to the psychology of a Kurdish terrorist leader. A Freudian, he develops striking and surprising associations deep at the root of feeling and action, reminiscent of Civilization and Its Discontents. His aim, however, is not merely to expose the psychological wellsprings of the problem, but to show how, when armed with this knowledge, the efforts of mediators from the outside can be made more effective. If one accepts the validity of generalizing from the individual cases on which he builds the analysis, the book provides an interesting and often arresting alternative to the growing mountain of treatises on nationalism and ethnicity produced by political scientists and sociologists."

Despite an abundance of literature on Richard Nixon, the man behind the most spectacular crash-and-burn career of modern political history has remained an enigma. What lay behind Nixon’s obsessive hunger for power and control, his paranoid offensives against enemies real and perceived, his refusal to accept defeat? Why did a man who had achieved so much feel so angry and unfulfilled, even at the height of his power? This is an enlightening psychoanalytical investigation of a troubled man whose insecurities brought about triumphs such as the opening of relations with China yet doomed him to suffer the most sensational downfall in American political history.

Richard Nixon: A Psychobiography is the first thoroughgoing psychological portrait of the 37th president, drawing upon telling interviews with Nixon intimates, published and archived materials, while employing a rigorous psychoanalytic methodology. Tracing the development of Nixon's complex psyche, the authors provide new insight not only into his unconscious motivations but also into the way they influenced his political actions, whether shrewd or disastrous.

The authors explore Nixon's difficult upbringing—his mean-spirited, abusive father and often-absent mother; episodic physical trauma and mental deprivation; the tragic deaths of his two brothers; his rejection by the first woman he hoped to marry; and the long pursuit of his eventual wife, Pat. Nixon emerges as a narcissistic man with an extraordinary sense of purpose, yet one who suffered from inner conflicts and self-destructive tendencies. His desire to heal difficult political conflicts and his need to punish himself continually were attempts to reconcile the crippling contradiction between a grandiose self image and animpoverished private sense of worth. Projecting his own devalued self image onto others, attempting to control and destroy them, Nixon surrendered to the excessive suspiciousness that would eventually lead to his downfall.

Here are the three faces of Nixon's complex psyche—the grandiose persona, which manifested itself in bold policy moves like "The New Federalism" and the China initiative; the peacemaker, whose desire to heal internal conflicts can be seen in the policies of détente and the "Southern" desegregation strategy; and the paranoid degraded self, which struck out against those who had humiliated him and was responsible for the bombing of Cambodia and the Watergate break-in.

This probing analysis makes intelligible the moments in Nixon's presidency that have provoked much speculation but few answers, from his attempt to talk to Vietnam war protesters during a pre-dawn visit to the Lincoln Memorial to his keeping of the White House tapes. A more nuanced, more humanized Nixon emerges in a book that also provides compelling evidence that the politics of a nation is subject to the unconscious needs, fears, and fantasies of its leaders.

“As a psychoanalyst and political scientist, I believe that this psychobiographical portrait of Richard Nixon is notable for reasons that go beyond the light it sheds on a public figure who remains an enigma, despite the volume of research that exist on him. Firstly, it enriches the domains of both psychoanalysis and political science: the former, because it provides a powerful riposte to those psychoanalysts who are skeptical that useful analytic insights can ever be derived from any source other than the sanctity of the couch; the latter, because it offers convincing evidence that determinants of political behavior cannot be derived solely from the external environment—that the unconscious needs, fears, and fantasies of political leaders play a significant role. Secondly, this type of profile serves to educate the general reader about the value of conducting leadership studies. More specifically, systematic analysis of irrational leadership behavior can contribute to an ability to understand it and cope with it. In the case of a world leader such as Richard Nixon, the implications of irrational behavior have proved to have a profound impact on the realms of both domestic and foreign policy.”

The Third Reich in the Unconscious concerns itself with the third element of the psychological impact of massive human trauma: transgenerational transmission of psychological tasks. In order to study this topic and identify its pertinence to Third Reich-related case studies, the authors both revisit the effects of the Holocaust on second-generation survivors and outline the mechanics of transgenerational transmission in general.

Describing in detail how transgenerational transmission occurs, this book focuses on the psychological processes of the younger generations, outside of their indentification with directly traumatized ancestors, and explains how historical images contaminate the expression of developmental conflicts at all levels.

Also included are complete treatment processes for Jewish and German second-generation individuals, and, for the very first time, a full analysis of a traveler (gypsy.) Accessible to the general reader The Third Reich in the Unconscious will beof interest to anyone concerned with the Holocaust or past traumatic historical events.

“At a time when there is an increasing threat to the security of the world and war is looming on the horizon, we can still find traces of the Third Reich in the unconscious of those who have been directly or indirectly affected by its evil. By analyzying the impact of war and destructiveness through the generations, the book is a most important contribution to the efforts for their prevention in the future.”

Ilany KOGAN,

Psychoanalyst and Training Analyst of the Israel Psychoanalytic Association.

“In spite of the unspeakable and unthinkable subject of this book, the authors have written hopefully, and with a deep faith in peoples’ wisdom and courage, that these malignancies can be ameliorated with the insights of psychoanalysis so that our children can be healthier and especially wiser to take action to prevent ongoing and worldwide needless tragedies, misery and genocide.”

This is a landmark book. While applied analysis has been met with scepticism and inhibition in the psychopolitical sphere, this lag has been overcome, and more than made up for, by the leap forward contributed by the authors of this volume. The dynamics and psychopathology of large group behavior, including conflicts between nations, can now take their place in depth understanding alongside that of the individual. The result, expanding Freud's Group Psychology, is an inestimable advance in the reach of psychoanalysis.

Why do they hate us so? Vamık D. Volkan has the most compelling, humane, and universal response to the riddle of our time. In this extraordinary and timely book, Volkan explains better than anyone the relationship between large-group identities and massive traumas and current events and ongoing conflicts around the world, including those related to the horrific attacks of 9/11.

“We are different, we are the same...

From a very early age, we have been taught and led to believe that in very simple terms, we are all the same regardless the colour of our skins.

But, what takes places in real world may well be in total contrast with what we might strongly believe in. Conflicts arising from ethnic and identity differences unfortunately occur before our very eyes and we can not do anything but watch with despair.

As somebody who has been living almost in the middle of such conflicts and having to deal with injured and dead children while pursuing my professional work as a journalist and writer, I would like to express my thanks to Dr. Volkan for writing this book which takes the reader into deep social and psychological thoughts.”

Regional and Ethnic Conflicts: Perspectives from the Front Lines provides an alternative vantage point that contributes new perspectives to the study of ethnopolitical conflict. The interest and insights students gain from this book into how complex ethnopolitical conflicts can be mitigated, resolved and prevented give hope to the future. From a pedagogical perspective, this text is designed to expose students to alternative perspectives. It adds realism and insight to students’ understanding of distal ethnopolitical conflicts. Contributors were purposely asked to discuss a range of factors to bring to light the complexity of ethnopolitical conflict. Their chapters are meant to prod students to internalize the importance of analyzing and understanding ethnopolitical conflicts from multiple perspectives.

“Primitive Internalized Object Relations is a lucid, admirable and important contribution to the application of object-relations theory for the treatment of severely regressed patients… The perusal of this excellent book will surely give therapists who are reluctant to undertake the psychoanalytic treatment of severely regressed patients greater optimism and encourage them to develop the skills necessary for the intellectually stimulating, arduous, fascinating, and highly rewarding venture.”

L. Bryce BOYER, M.D.,

"Vamık D. Volkan's first book, Primitive Internalized Object Relations, is a well-written, highly readable study that enriches the psychoanalytic literature in two particularly relevant ways. He adds significantly to the work of contemporary theoreticians such as Otto Kernberg, Heinz Kohut, Harold Searles, and Hyman Spotnitz, who have been attempting to extend the parameters of psychoanalytic theory and technique beyond the Oedipal neurotic to include treatment of people with pre-Oedipal disorders—schizophrenic, borderline, and narcissistic patients. He has made considerable progress toward formulating a theoretical framework to unify classical psychoanalytic drive theory and contemporary object-relations theory. The application of this unified drive/object theory in the treatment of these patients is the major theme of this book."

Dr. Volkan uses precise, strong and sometimes poetic language to present a treatment approach for work with borderline patients. His entire treatment method is set forth in six steps that reflect the patient's actual sequential experience in the therapeutic process. Unlike many therapists who write about therapy approaches, Dr. Volkan presents his work with nine psychosis-prone borderline patients who underwent his specific treatment plan, as well as a detailed account of a six-year, seven-month analysis of Pattie, which the author described as a "long journey into an intrapsychic world."

Reviews:

“This book should have a chilling effect on those critics of psychoanalysis who (mistakenly in my opinion) assert that analysts, in their writings, hide behind dense jargon, do not provide enough clinical data, avoid revealing their subjective experiences, and are not systematic in the presentation of their case material. Dr. Volkan’s book is a theoretical feast, a clinical gem, and a literary delight.”

“Vamık Volkan is a widely recognized among who are au courant regarding the psychotherapy of borderline disorders as one of the most profound and creative thinkers in the field today. Possessing an almost singular capacity to convey in clear, concise, and vivid language the complex interrelatedness of metapsychology and technique, he elaborates a theory of treatment that is both systematic and solidly grounded in experience.”
Terry C. RODGERS, M.D.,
Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego.

“His account of his work with this young woman [Pattie] is thoroughly fascinating, deeply moving, and inspiring in its portrayal of her progress from depths of near-psychotic illness into full-flowering mental and emotional health. The reader becomes so involved in this account that the eventual, highy successful termination of the therapy brings sadness, as well as joyously healthy fulfillment, not only to the patient and to Dr. Volkan, but vicariously to the reader as well.”

“Unlike most edited volumes of its sort, Attitudes of Entitlement is a tightly organized, persistently focused, and cogently argued book. Drs. Vamık Volkan and  Terry Rodgers are to be congratulated on putting this outstanding volume together. The topic they have chosen is not only hotly debated in contemporary psychoanalytic circles but is of profound universal significance. The importance of   understanding narcissism and feeling of entitlement that emanates from it is far reaching. It helps us to empathize with the seemingly inordinate demands of pathologically narcissistic individuals so commonly seen these days in psychoanalytic practices. Additionally, it sharpens our grasp of sociopolitical conflicts that often emanate from ‘narcissism of minor differences’.”

“I forecast that Volkan’s work will initiate a change toward more courage in psychoanalysts and other   clinicians to take these difficult patients in treatment. Volkan is able to offer a reality-based promise of alleviation and sometimes even cure of the psychopathology of these patients by putting complex and primitive mental phenomena in simple words and easily understandable conceptual categories.”

Johannes LEHTONEN, M.D.,

Professor and Cahirman, Department of Psychiatry, University of Kuopio, Finland.

“We all study and struggle to explain the ever-changing  dynamics of mental processes. However, only rarely do we find a person who has mastered the myriad facets of developmental psychic processes and is able to write it in convincing and helpful language. Vamık Volkan is such a person. In this book, Dr. Volkan performs the scholarly feat of knitting the many biological and psychodynamic elements of severely regressed patients  into a whole fabric. Dr. Volkan is not afraid to reclaim the psychotic core into the mainstream of psychodynamic developmental psychology, clinical technique, and countertransference theory, in order to show the great relevance of talking therapy to these patients.”

This book is the first psychoanalytic study to consider the effect of childhood experiences with siblings as central to the psychopathologic picture presented by adult psychopathology. Seventeen cases (5 male, 12 female) are discussed at length. The purpose is to draw attention to the centrality of childhood experience with siblings in the development of adult psychopathology. Because most analytic descriptions consider adult-child relationships, the focus on child-child relationships opens up an intriguing view of psychopathology. The book is primarily addressed to psychoanalysts, but anyone treating patients dynamically will benefit from it. The book is full of rich clinical material that any practicing therapist will easily relate to his or her own practice. The one table lists psycopathologic phenomena found in the 17 patients studied.

“For too long, psychoanalysis has neglected the vast role of siblings in our emotional lives. Vamık Volkan and Gabriele Ast help overcome this neglect in their superb book. Their central contention is that experiences with siblings frequently shape pathogenic unconscious fantasies, which must in turn be elucidated in order for treatment to be fully effective…In exemplary fashion, they blend the best of traditional psychoanalysis with newer theoretical innovations.”

“Vamık Volkan again, now with co-author Gabriele Ast, serves us well with a rich and innovative contribution… This work heightens our awareness to an insufficiently considered influence at play in our patients’ psyches, enlarging the arena of our patients’ objectal intrapsychic lives beyond the well understood role of the vital representations of mother and father.”

This book describes the contribution of constitution, environment (familial and larger society) and fantasy (parental and child) to the formation of a psychotic core that may eventuate in psychosis. Implications for treatment are described. The seven contributors share a common psychoanalytic point of view. The aim is to study the "beginning of madness." In this study, constitutional and psychological factors are studied and integrated into a coherent whole. The resulting summary of current psychoanalytic thinking about the psychotic core is badly needed. The authors meet their aim very well in a series of theoretical chapters fleshed out by the discussion of three case histories. This book is written for psychoanalysts, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The authors represent European and American psychoanalytic thinking and are well known for their work. Appropriate references appear at the end of each chapter. This slim book is neat in appearance and easy to use. This is a highly significant contribution to the psychoanalytic understanding of the formation of the psychotic core. The case histories demonstrate the place of transference phenomena in the treatment of such patients, and the book should be required reading for all those who treat very significantly disturbed patients, whether from a biological or psychological point of view.

“Drs. Volkan and Akhtar have brought new vitality to the psychoanalytic study of the psychoses and related disturbances. In this fascinating volume, they have assembled an international team of experts who re-examine the concept of the psychotic core, using a highly sophisticated and carefully crafted lens. The reader is skillfully guided through the maze of developmental, environmental, and neurobiological factors which can go awry to create ‘the Seed of Madness’.”

Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College,
and Training and Supervising Analyst, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, PA.

"There are three reasons the book is of interest and may represent a useful reading.

The first is that it provides a timely summary and integration of psychoanalytic contributions to the study of schizophrenia.

The second reason the book is of interest is that it nicely reflects the current attention of part of the psychoanalytic movement to the progress of neurosciences. Vamık Volkan, in his introductory piece, mentions “genetic (biological) determinants”as first in the list of what “passes through the channel” of early mother-child experiences.

The third reason the book is interesting is that it illustrates the persisting difficulty psychoanalysts have in realizing how important it is to provide the empirical basis of any statement concerning the determinants of mental disorders.

The book provides a nice picture of the status of psychoanalytic investigation of schizophrenia circa 1994, with its persisting fascination and weaknesses. No doubt the reader will predominantly appreciate the former or the latter, depending on his or her “multidetermined” disposition."

Drs. Akhtar and Volkan, examine new research in ways the relationships of people and animals are reflected in human psychopathology. They describe how animals figure in psychiatric symptoms, and how people project their concerns onto animals or describe an aspect of their thinking in terms of animals and their behaviors. They continue by examining case studies of patients and pathologies with connections to animals, such as the horses of Little Hans and the image of the Wolfman, and presenting recent research in how dogs, birds, snakes, spiders, and cats figure in both diagnosis and therapy. Episodes of cruelty to animals are described. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Searching for the Perfect Woman is not your typical psychotherapy case; it is the story of one man's inner struggle to find peace and happiness in an internal world filled with dangerous father figures and tempting but rejecting femme fatales. Training analyst, author, and four-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Vamık D. Volkan weaves a compelling story of Hamilton's complete psychoanalysis. From one angle, it is an evocative, accessible page-turner, drawing readers from the professional world and the lay public into the inner life of a compulsive womanizer, and the psychoanalytic treatment that brought about massive change in his inner life and personal relationships. From another angle, it is about the profound influence of historical traumas transmitted across generations and how not only an individual's parents' personal trauma, but also ancestors' historical traumas, reverberate in the current generation. Our ancestors' suffering during wars, for example, does not disappear when our ancestors die or when wars end, but continues to influence their offspring. For the deeply inquisitive person and serious students of psychoanalysis, this is an opportunity to learn about psychoanalytic theory and techniqueapplied to a single case.

The book confronts the question "Does psychoanalysis help?" Through this detailed account of the psychoanalytic treatment processes, the reader witnesses the slow but compelling changes in Hamilton's internal world. Interspersed throughout the manuscript, J. Christopher Fowler, an experienced therapist, clinical researcher, and educator, challenges Dr. Volkan to explain how his psychoanalytic techniques affect changes in Hamilton's mind.

“Vamık D. Volkan is renowned for bringing his psychoanalytic knowledge and insight to problems on a world scale. Here he applies his gifts to the microcosm of an individual psychoanalysis, the story of two people wrestling with the demons of one man's past to achieve his personal liberation and rebirth. Readers of all kinds will be moved and enlightened by the access Dr. Volkan offers to the process. Professional readers at all levels of experience can learn here from a master craftsman about technique, the true application of empathy, and the personal grit demanded of the analyst. The innovative structure of the book provides a sophisticated and sensitive interlocutor in J. Christopher Fowler, who speaks for the reader to enhance our understanding of Volkan's thoughts, feelings, and choices.”

“This is an eminent basic psychoanalytic text—based on a case history—by an empathic, classical analyst, working with a generous, interesting patient. Both beginners and experienced analysts can profit from it. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan also succeeds in showing the importance of transgenerational transmission and its power in creating symptoms and personality traits."

Tomas BÖHM, M.D.,
Swedish Psychoanalytic Society.

"Volkan and Fowler have given us a gem of a story and a rare opportunity to slow it down and examine the inner workings of a successful psychoanalysis. With Fowler as interlocuter, we are with the analyst as he hears the patient's material, notices what goes through his mind, lets his feelings inform him, speaks and then listens to what comes back. We feel an accruing appreciation for the deep historicity of human lives and the intertwining of technique and relationship in the consulting room. Like the patient and the analyst, we come away from this encounter profoundly enriched, not only by our renewed understanding of the work of a clinical psychoanalysis—its pulse, pain and beauty—but also by the joy of it as well."
