 Dr. Volkan is an Emeritus Professor of  Psychiatry
at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Dr. Volkan is the Senior Erik Erikson Scholar
at the Erikson Institute for Research and Education of the Austen Riggs Center.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Austen Riggs Center is a non-profit, open psychiatric continum of care specializing in the psychotherapeutic treatment of psychiatric disorders. Internationally known for its respectful work with emotionally troubled
 individuals who have failed to benefit from previous treatment.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
CSMHI (The Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction)
 was founded by Dr. Volkan in 1987.
He directed it until 2002. CSMHI was closed in 2005.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
CSMHI had projects in locations such as the Soviet Union,
 the Baltic Republics, Kuwait, Albania, Croatia, Republic
 of  Georgia, South Ossetia, Greece, and Turkey,
 where it facilitated unofficial diplomatic negotiations between "enemy" groups.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Dr. Volkan is a Training and Supervising Analyst Emeritus
at the Washinghton Psychoanalytic Institute.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Washington Center for Psychoanalys is a non-profit association based in Washington, DC. which provides clinical and non-clinical training in psychoanalysis
 and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as well as other psychoanalytic theory
and a full program of psychoanalytic scientific meetings, and lectures.
    
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Dr. Volkan was the founder and the editor
of Mind & Human Interaction from 1987 until 2003.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Mind and Human Interaction was a biannual journal that combined
 the perspectives of psychoanalysis, psychiatry, diplomacy, political science, history, sociology, and anthropology to provide in-depth analysis of the psychological processes beneath the surface of conflict, acculturation, ethnonational identity, and other aspects of human relations.

The Vamık D. Volkan Lecture Series will be held
 between October 2009 and April 2011.
A team of experts, which will offer their experienceas trainers,
will be headed by Professor Vamık D. Volkan,
Lord John Alderdice, and Ambassador (ret.) Nathaniel W. Howell.

 Dr. Volkan is the President of the American College of Psychoanalysts
 
 (2009-2010.)
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The American College of Psychoanalysts,
 is the national honorary organization of physician-psychoanalysts.
The College honors, as Fellows, psychoanalysts who aside
from completing medical school, psychiatry residency,
 and psychoanalytic training, have distinguished themselves. 
Fellows’ accomplishments encompass many areas relevant
 to the practice of psychoanalysis, including research, administration,

Dr. Volkan is the Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board
of the OA Publishing Company.
OA Publishing Company has established the Annual Vamık D. Volkan Award, which will be given every year to the "Best work" in the field of political psychology starting from February 2011.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
OA Publishing Company, is based in Turkey, Bosnia, Germany, and Great Britain.
 It specializes in publishing books on current historical events in Turkey

Dr. Volkan was a Visiting Professor of Political Psychology
at Bahçeşehir University, and maintains close relationship
 with this teaching institution. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Bahçeşehir University has been sponsoring
a series of international dialogues among key persons from many different countries under the co-chairmanship of Dr. Volkan and Lord John Alderdice.
The Bahçeşehir University International Dialogue Initiative
 examines large-group differences and tries to find "entry points"
